Surreal
limestone outcrops peer down on marine coastal terraces in
the ancient Waitutu Forest and across Lake Poteriteri to the
rugged mountain ranges of this massive World Heritage area.
The
Waitutu area was visited by early Maori on their way to gather
pounamu and their tracks lead along terraces and beaches similar
to today's track. A coastal track to Cromarty built in 1896
was followed by a telegraph line in 1908 to Puysegur Point
lighthouse. Then in the 1920's Port Craig sawmill, New Zealand's
largest and most modern of the time, led to the construction
of a bush tramway and four viaducts across ravines.
From
Te Waewae Bay the track climbs high on to the Hump
Ridge and Okaka Hut. Take the scenic loop track
for panoramic views of the southern Ocean and Southern
Alps amidst limestone tors and mountain tarns.
Descend back to the south coast track through pristine
forest, along old tram lines and across a series
of wooden viaducts including the mighty Percy Burn
thought to be the largest remaining wooden viaduct
in the world. Explore the historic Port Craig Village
with a chance to see rare Hectors dolphins before
returning via bush and beach trails to the start
of the track.
