A good pair of comfortable walking boots or shoes is essential! Please take some time now to break any new footwear in....heck you could even your walking boots to work. Some people find gaiters and walking sticks helpful.

Thermal underwear (even in summer) is highly recommended. Quick-dry clothing is an advantage. Thermal fibres, polar fleece or wool all do a good job. We do not recommend you walk in cotton garments, jeans or silk thermals. Perspiration means you are likely to feel damp and cold. Denim is very cold and heavy when wet.

We suggest you put all your clothing in plastic bags inside a pack liner for added water protection. Keep your pack as light as possible while still taking the essentials. We have a variety of packs, walking equipment, wet weather gear and walking poles available for hire from our Tuatapere office - please advise in advance if you require any gear.

Recommended Equipment

Walking
- Waterproof raincoat with hood
- Boots or strong walking shoes, preferably with ankle support
- Woolen or polypropylene thermal underwear (top & bottom)
- Warm hat (fleece or woolen),light gloves
- Fleece jacket or micro fleece top
- Walking shorts and underwear
- Woolen or thermal socks - at least two pairs
- Sunscreen and insect repellent
- Water Bottle
- Camera, glasses

Evenings
- Shirt or Sweater
- Trousers, skirt or track pants
- Sandals or lightweight shoes
- Pajamas or night wear
- Small personal torch or headlamp
- Handkerchiefs, not tissues
- Personal toiletries
